Holiday Tree Disposal
Reduce. Reuse. Rejoice!
The City of Fort Lauderdale makes
holiday tree disposal easy for residents. Instead of using drop-off
locations, residents can recycle their trees in one of three ways:
1. Place them inside the green yard
waste cart,
2. Leave them out for bulk trash
pick-up, or
3. Take them to one of Broward
County’s three Trash Transfer Stations.
Yard Waste Cart Disposal Option
If trees are placed in the yard waste
cart, they must be cut into pieces so the lid can close completely. To
reduce collection and disposal costs, the City strongly encourages
residents to recycle trees using the yard waste cart.
Bulk Trash Disposal Option
Residents who choose to use the bulk
trash pickup option are asked to leave trees next to the bulk pile. To
properly recycle trees, remove all decorations, lights, tinsel, nails,
tacks, tree stand or any other decorative materials.
Broward County Trash Transfer Station
Option
Residents may take advantage of
Broward County’s Yard Waste Program and drop off their trees and at
one of the County’s three Trash Transfer Stations. With proof of
residency,** Broward County residents may dispose of household yard
waste, including holiday trees, up to four timer per month at no
charge. The three drop-off locations, which are open from 8 a.m. to 4
p.m. on Saturdays only, are:
1. North Station - 2780 N. Powerline
Road in Pompano Beach
2. Central Station - 5490 Reese Road
in Davie
3. South Station - 5601 W. Hallandale
Beach Boulevard in West Park
** Proof of residency includes a
current driver's license/photo ID with a utility bill (water,
electricity, cable, telephone) and/or tax notice (name and address
must match). For more information about the County’s Yard Waste
Program or drop-off locations, visit
www.broward.org/waste/yardwaste.htm or call 954.765.4999.
For more information about holiday
tree disposal in the City of Fort Lauderdale, please contact the City
of Fort Lauderdale’s 24-hour Customer Service Center at 954.828.8000
or online at
http://fortlauderdale.gov/customerservice/index.htm.
PLEASE NOTE: Bayview Park, Croissant
Park, Holiday Park or any other City park no longer serve as drop off
locations. Please utilize the above recycling options.
Did You Know?
For each real Christmas tree
harvested, up to three new seedlings are planted in its place,
depending on farm size and current field rotation. Young trees in
their rapid growth years have a high rate of photosynthesis and thus
produce more oxygen than older trees.
Help Keep Sewer Lines
Free from ‘FOG’ this Holiday Season
Fats, oils, and grease (FOG) include
meat fats, dairy products, food scraps, cooking oils, sauces,
dressings, sandwich spreads, gravies, marinades, dairy products,
shortenings, lard, butter and margarine, and they are a major cause of
sewer line backups and breaks.
Overflows and spills from sewer lines
can result in raw sewage entering your home, a neighbor’s home, local
streets and neighborhood parks. Or, it can enter a storm drain, which
flows directly into a local waterway. Raw sewage can cause health
hazards and harm the aquatic environment because it could contain
bacteria, viruses and polluted materials.
Sewer line backups and breaks are
expensive to repair and unpleasant to clean up. The following
guidelines will assist you with managing household FOG and protecting
the environment, as well as the City’s infrastructure.
- Never pour fats, oils, grease,
food scraps or other cooking or household liquids down a drain or
into a toilet.
- Pour FOG into a heat resistant and
sturdy non-recyclable container. Once the container is full and has
cooled down, throw it out in the garbage.
- Scrape grease and food scraps from
dishes, pots, utensils, etc. into the trash before washing or
putting them in the dishwasher. Dishwashers do not get rid of
grease.
- Use sink strainer baskets to catch
food and other waste and empty it into the garbage.
- Never rinse or flush FOG down the
drain with hot water and/or dish soap. It does not dissolve grease
and may push it further into your sewer lines.
- Never pour FOG into a garbage
disposal. A garbage disposal is designed to shred solid materials
into smaller pieces. It does not dissolve grease.
- Large quantities of fryer oil,
such as that used for deep frying a turkey, can be disposed of at a
Broward County Household Hazardous Waste site. For information about
drop-off locations, call 954-765-4999 or visit
www.broward.org.
Report illegal dumping into the storm
drain or sanitary sewer system, clogged storm drains, or overflowing
manholes by contacting the 24-hour Customer Service Center at
954-828-8000 or online at
http://fortlauderdale.gov/customerservice/index.htm.
Drinking Water System
Preventative Maintenance Set for Nov. 28 – Dec. 19
The City of Fort Lauderdale is
temporarily returning to using free chlorine in its drinking water
system. This preventative maintenance procedure will be conducted
beginning at 11p on Saturday, November 28 through 11p on Saturday,
December 19, 2009.
Free chlorination is a common
practice for water systems using combined chlorine disinfection. The
chlorination period is anticipated to be transparent to our customers;
however, some may notice a slight change in the taste or smell of
their tap water.
This procedure will affect the City
of Fort Lauderdale, as well as Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Oakland Park,
Port Everglades Authority, Village of Sea Ranch Lakes, Wilton Manors
and sections of Davie and Tamarac.
The City of Fort Lauderdale maintains
the highest standards to ensure that clean, high quality drinking
water is delivered to water customers. The City's drinking water meets
federal, state and local drinking water quality standards.
Water customers who receive a utility
bill from the City of Fort Lauderdale may contact the City’s 24-Hour
Customer Service Center at 954-828-8000 or online at
http://fortlauderdale.gov/customerservice/index.htm for
more information.
Customers who do not receive a
utility bill from the City of Fort Lauderdale should call their
respective city’s customer service phone number for more information.

Program. Board members nominate homes for a WOW award; however,
residents may nominate their homes or a neighbor’s home for an award.
Nominations may be for landscaping, renovation, property maintenance,
overall exterior beauty and style, and neighborhood enhancement.
If a property is selected as a WOW

Commission meeting, a gift certificate from a program sponsor, and a
WOW Winner yard sign to display on their property. The owner’s home
will also be featured on Channel 78, the City’s government access
cable station, and possibly be featured in local and City

Citizens’ Recognition
Awards Background Information
& Nomination Forms
The City of Fort Lauderdale initiated

is to give public recognition to citizens who contributed in
significant ways to the development of this community.
Honorees are selected by the
Citizens’ Committee of Recognition, which consists of all former

Recognition Program would be revised to include a Citizen of the Year
and a Distinguished Citizen honoree. The program was again amended in
1989 to include an Honored Founder category effective in 1990. In

Since the inception of the Citizen
Recognition Program, 101 outstanding citizens have received such
honors.

category was initiated in 1997. The award recognizes a former City
employee who has served the citizens of Fort Lauderdale for a
significant number of years and whose service has made a significant
impact on the development and quality of life for the community. This
person may be retired, deceased or separated from the City.
DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN
The Distinguished Citizen award is
given to that resident of the community who has contributed to the
development of the community over a number of years (i.e., a
pioneer).
CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

Commission, has made the greatest contribution to the community in the
current year. The Citizen of the Year must be a resident of the City
of Fort Lauderdale.
